We could not confirm that Capitec sells private car insurance. Capitec's website blocked our checks on every page, so we could not read its product pages, contact numbers or app details, and we did not try to get around that. No private motor insurer is verified for Capitec.
That is worth saying plainly, because plenty of pages online imply Capitec has a motor product. What we can verify is on the life side: Capitec Life Limited writes funeral business on its own licence, and Capitec issues credit life policies. Neither one insures your car.
This page sets out what is confirmed and what is not, and what to do if you bank with Capitec and want to insure your car. Bank product ranges change, so check the Capitec app or the bank's website for what is available to you.
Does Capitec sell car insurance?
We could not confirm either way. Capitec's website returned a security block to every automated check we made, including its insurance and contact pages, so we could not read what it says about motor cover. We did not try to bypass the block.
What we can say is that no Capitec private motor insurer is verified, and the insurance activity we could confirm is life-side. That is not proof that no motor product exists. Banks move into and out of insurance lines, so treat this as a snapshot. The reliable check is your own Capitec app or the bank's website.
Be careful with third-party pages offering a Capitec car insurance quote. Some pages like this pass your details on to whichever insurer or broker pays for them, so deal with the bank's own channels or a licensed insurer directly.
What to know about Capitec in 2026

- The funeral arrangement with Sanlam/Centriq ended on 31 October 2024, after a seven-year term launched in November 2017. (sharenet.co.za)

What Capitec does insure, on the record
Capitec's confirmed insurance activity is on the life side. Capitec obtained its long-term insurance licence in 2022. Its funeral arrangement with Sanlam and Centriq ended on 31 October 2024, after a seven-year term that began in November 2017. From 1 November 2024, Capitec Life Limited, a licensed insurer in the Capitec group, began writing new funeral business on its own licence.
Credit life is the other piece. Capitec began issuing credit life policies in May 2023, and reported 558 417 credit life policies issued on its own licence in the year to 29 February 2024. Credit life covers a loan balance, not a vehicle. It insures the debt, not the car.
Capitec contact numbers, claims and app
Checked on 29 September 2026 against Capitec's official website. Numbers and channels change, so confirm on the linked page before you call. Capitec will not ask you to pay into a new bank account over the phone; hang up and call the official number if anything feels off.
We could not confirm Capitec's numbers on its website on the date above, so we do not list any. Use the contact page on capitecbank.co.za.
What is confirmed and what is not
| Question | Status |
|---|---|
| Does Capitec have its own life licence? | Confirmed: Capitec Life Limited writes funeral business on its own licence |
| Does Capitec issue credit life policies? | Confirmed |
| Does Capitec sell a private car policy? | Not confirmed. Capitec's website blocked our checks |

Until Capitec's own site confirms otherwise, plan on shopping the open market for car cover. Quote at least three insurers on identical cover before you accept any bank-linked option.
Insuring a car you financed through a bank
If a bank finances your vehicle, your credit agreement will normally require you to keep comprehensive insurance in place for the life of the loan, and the bank's interest in the vehicle is noted with the insurer. Check your own agreement for the exact terms.
Two things usually follow. First, you are generally free to choose your own insurer rather than take the one offered at the finance desk, so shop it. Second, consider credit shortfall cover, sometimes called top-up. If the car is written off or stolen early in the loan, the insured value can be less than the settlement balance, and shortfall cover pays that gap. Without it, you can be left owing money on a car you no longer have.
Let the policy lapse and you may breach the credit agreement, so keep the premium up to date.
If you bank with Capitec and need car cover
Start by checking the Capitec app or capitecbank.co.za for any insurance option that is current. If you see one, find out who the licensed insurer is and check its licence on the FSCA register before you sign.
Then get quotes from several licensed insurers on the same cover, with the same excess and the same drivers. Being a Capitec client does not stop you from buying car insurance anywhere else.
Your rights and where to complain
If a claim is rejected or handled badly, start with the insurer's own internal complaints process and ask for the decision in writing. If that does not resolve it, you can refer the dispute free of charge to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa (nfosa.co.za), which took over short-term insurance complaints from the former Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI) when the schemes merged in 2024. Complaints about the advice you were given, rather than the claim itself, go to the FAIS Ombud. Market conduct is regulated by the FSCA, and insurers themselves are licensed under the Insurance Act by the Prudential Authority.
Frequently asked questions
Does Capitec offer car insurance?
We could not confirm it. Capitec's website blocked our checks, and no private motor insurer is verified for Capitec. The insurance activity we could verify is life-side: funeral cover written by Capitec Life Limited and credit life. Check the Capitec app for the current range.
Who underwrites Capitec insurance?
Capitec Life Limited, part of the Capitec group, began writing new funeral business on its own licence from 1 November 2024, after the Sanlam and Centriq funeral arrangement ended on 31 October 2024. No private motor insurer is verified for Capitec.
Can I insure my car through the Capitec app?
We could not check the app, so we cannot say. If you see a car insurance option there, read who the licensed insurer is before signing, and compare it against two or three independent quotes on the same cover.
Do I have to insure a car financed by a bank?
Usually, yes. Vehicle finance agreements normally require comprehensive cover for the life of the loan, with the bank's interest noted on the policy. Check your own agreement. You can generally choose your own insurer, so quote the market.
Does Capitec offer fleet insurance?
We could not verify that. If you run a business and want fleet cover, ask Capitec directly, and quote fleet cover from licensed insurers as well.
Why do websites advertise Capitec car insurance quotes?
Some are lead-generation pages that rank for the search term and then pass your details to whichever insurer or broker pays for them. Deal with the bank's own channels or a licensed insurer directly instead.
Is Capitec credit life the same as car insurance?
No. Credit life covers a loan balance and does nothing if your car is damaged, stolen or written off. You need a separate motor policy for that.
