Hippo.co.za is a South African comparison platform, not an insurer. It is a subsidiary of Telesure Investment Holdings (TIH), the group that also owns Auto & General, Budget Insurance, Dialdirect and 1st for Women. Hippo says this is disclosed on its About page.

You enter your details once and Hippo shows quotes from its panel of partner insurers. Hippo says it compares 13 car insurers and orders results by price alone. The cover you buy is underwritten by the insurer you choose, not by Hippo.

This review explains how the comparison works, what the ownership means, its limits, and the checks to do before you buy. We are an independent information site, not a broker, and we do not sell policies.

What Hippo actually is

Hippo is a comparison service. It says it is not an insurer and describes itself as an independent comparison platform. You enter your details once and it returns quotes from a panel of partner insurers. When you proceed, you buy a policy underwritten and serviced by that insurer, so your cover, claims and complaints sit with them, not with Hippo.

This matters at claim time. Hippo helps you find and compare, but the contract and the claim are with the insurer behind the quote. Read that insurer's wording, not just the comparison summary.

Who owns Hippo

Hippo Comparative Services (Pty) Ltd (FSP 16357) is a subsidiary of Telesure Investment Holdings (TIH). TIH also owns and operates several insurance brands, including Auto & General, Budget Insurance, Dialdirect, 1st for Women and Virseker. Hippo's own pages say Hippo is part of the TIH family, which includes insurance brands.

Hippo says 93% of its partners are not part of TIH, and that results are ordered by price alone. That means some panel insurers are group companies. We cannot see how the ranking works, so treat the comparison as one input, and check at least one or two insurers outside it.

Several insurers we review on this site belong to the same group. We say so because it is relevant when you read a comparison.

How the comparison works

You enter your ID number, personal details, vehicle make, model and year, and your regular driver. Hippo then shows quotes ranked by price, cover and excess. Hippo says the prices come straight from its partners with no markup added.

After you pick a quote, the chosen insurer calls you to do a fuller quotation. Hippo says the additional questions may change the premium from the one you were shown on its website, so the number on screen is not the final price.

Hippo says not every insurer appears, and that if you do not see a brand, that is the brand's decision. Some well-known brands may be missing. Because it is a panel, the comparison covers Hippo's partners and not the whole market.

Strengths and limits of a comparison site

The strength is convenience: one form, several quotes, faster shopping. Hippo is free to use. It says its partners pay a referral fee if you accept a policy through Hippo, which is how it keeps the service free. It can surface options you might not have considered and saves you repeating your details across many sites.

The limits are real. The panel is not the entire market, the quotes are only as accurate as the details you enter, the insurer's fuller quotation can change the premium, and the cheapest result may have a higher excess or narrower cover. Compare on cover and excess, not price alone, and confirm the final terms with the chosen insurer.

To use Hippo, open its quote page, have your vehicle, driver, use and overnight parking details ready, and expect a call from the insurer you pick. Check that the final premium and excess match what you were shown. We are an independent information site and not a broker, so we do not quote or sell.

Excess, exclusions and non-disclosure traps

Excess and exclusions are set by the partner insurer you pick, not by Hippo, and they vary by product, vehicle and driver. Read the chosen insurer's schedule and wording before you accept the policy.

The usual claim traps apply: driving without a valid licence, drink driving, undisclosed business or e-hailing use, and non-disclosure of material facts can lead to a claim being reduced or rejected. Because you enter details into a comparison form, be especially careful that everything you submit is accurate and carried correctly into the final policy.

Claims, complaints and your rights

You claim with the partner insurer that underwrote your policy, not with Hippo. Report promptly, get a claim number, keep evidence and follow that insurer's process. Accident claims usually need a police case or accident reference number.

If the insurer rejects or underpays and internal channels do not resolve it, you can escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud (NFO), which absorbed the former Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI). Before buying, verify that the chosen insurer is licensed on the FSCA register.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hippo a car insurance company?

No. Hippo is a comparison platform. It shows quotes from a panel of partner insurers, and the policy you buy is underwritten and serviced by one of those insurers, not by Hippo. Your claim sits with that insurer.

Who owns Hippo.co.za?

Hippo Comparative Services (Pty) Ltd is a subsidiary of Telesure Investment Holdings (TIH). TIH also owns Auto & General, Budget Insurance, Dialdirect and 1st for Women. Hippo says 93% of its partners are not part of TIH and that results are ordered by price alone.

Does Hippo compare every insurer in South Africa?

No. Hippo says it compares 13 insurers, and that if you do not see a brand, that is the brand's decision. It is worth also checking a couple of insurers outside the panel before deciding.

Is the cheapest quote on Hippo the best one?

Not necessarily. A lower premium can mean a higher excess or narrower cover. The insurer's fuller quotation can also change the premium. Compare quotes on cover, excess and total cost, and read the chosen insurer's wording before you buy.

Does it cost anything to use Hippo?

Not to you. Hippo says it is free to use and that its partners pay a referral fee if you accept a policy through Hippo.

Who do I claim from if I buy through Hippo?

You claim from the partner insurer that underwrote your policy, not from Hippo. Follow that insurer's claims process and keep your evidence and claim number.

What if the insurer rejects my claim unfairly?

Follow the insurer's internal complaints process first. If unresolved, escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud, which absorbed the former OSTI. The ombud can review whether the rejection was fair.

Is using Hippo safe?

Comparison sites are a common way to shop, but verify the chosen insurer on the FSCA register and read its wording. We are an independent information site and do not sell policies.
