- OUTsurance website, app or call centre (mainly direct; an advisor phones you back with your premium)
OUTsurance is a mainly direct South African insurer, best known for its OUTbonus, a cash payback you can earn if you go a set period without claiming. You can quote and claim online, on the app or by phone, although its contact page also mentions contacting your OUTsurance broker, so some clients do have one.
That direct, value-led model suits drivers who want a clear product, are comfortable dealing with a call centre or app, and like the idea of money back for staying claim free. It suits less if you want a broker to manage your cover, or if you expect the Essential product to protect you like comprehensive cover does.
This review explains OUTsurance's comprehensive cover, the Essential car insurance product for older unfinanced cars, how the OUTbonus works, and the excess and exclusion traps to watch. We are an independent information site, not a broker, so quote and claim through OUTsurance directly.
Who OUTsurance suits
OUTsurance suits drivers who want a mostly direct relationship with their insurer and like the OUTbonus reward for staying claim free. It works well if you are happy to manage cover online or by phone and want a clearly packaged product.
It suits less if you want a broker to advise and act for you, or if you assume the Essential plan offers the same protection as comprehensive cover. Match the product to your needs rather than the marketing.
What to know about OUTsurance in 2026
- OUTbonus: 10% of paid car premiums back in cash after three consecutive claim-free years, then 10% after another two claim-free years, then 10% for every claim-free year after that. Any paid claim forfeits the bonus for that cycle. (outsurance.co.za)
- Essential car insurance is only for cars that are older than five years, not financed and valued at less than R150,000. It gives up to R1 million liability cover, theft and hijack cover (full retail value minus a standard R3 370 first amount not covered) and pays accident damage in cash up to 40% of retail value. (outsurance.co.za)
- Essential pays claims in cash so you can pick your own repairer, less a R3 370 first amount not covered, and does not include Help@OUT roadside assistance. (outsurance.co.za)
- Comprehensive cover includes Help@OUT roadside assistance 24/7 with annual limits of R5 000 and a maximum of two incidents per OUTsured vehicle; Help@OUT is not covered under Essential. (outsurance.co.za)
- SmartDrive@OUT: a free app-based driving score that earns a guaranteed 10% discount on your monthly premium once minimum requirements are met (at least 200 km and five separate trips to build the scorecard). (outsurance.co.za)
- Panic Assistance in the OUTsurance app sends the closest medical or armed-response unit to your location 24/7 at no extra cost to policyholders, and you can add up to three friends or family members. (outsurance.co.za)
- R500/R1500 promotion: if OUTsurance cannot beat your current premium on a like-for-like quote you can ask for R500, or R1500 if you have been with the same insurer for at least three years without claiming. After 24 months you may repeat the process. (outsurance.co.za)
- Digital vehicle inspection: you can do the vehicle inspection needed to secure cover in the app with a couple of photos instead of visiting an inspection centre. (outsurance.co.za)
Comprehensive versus Essential cover
OUTsurance comprehensive cover is the full product: accident, theft, hijacking, natural-disaster damage and third-party liability, with a fixed excess, the cash OUTbonus and 24/7 Help@OUT roadside assistance included.
Essential is narrower and only available for some cars. It is for cars older than five years, not financed and valued at less than R150,000. It gives up to R1 million liability cover, theft and hijack cover, and pays accident damage in cash up to 40% of retail value. Claims are paid in cash, less a R3 370 first amount not covered, so you choose your own repairer. Essential does not include Help@OUT roadside assistance.
OUTsurance's car page lists comprehensive and Essential, plus motor warranty and 4x4 insurance. It does not show a standalone third party only product. Read what Essential caps before you choose it on price alone, because a lower premium can mean a bigger gap when you claim.

How the OUTbonus works
The OUTbonus is a cash payback. If you have an active policy and do not claim for three consecutive years, you receive 10% of your paid car premiums back in cash. After another two claim-free years you receive 10% of the premiums paid in that time, and then 10% for every claim-free year after that.
It is conditional. Any paid claim forfeits the bonus for that cycle. Confirm the current rules for your policy on OUTsurance's own channels before you rely on it.
SmartDrive@OUT, Panic Assistance and the app
SmartDrive@OUT is a free app-based driving score. Once you meet the minimum requirements, which are at least 200 km and five separate trips to build your scorecard, it earns a guaranteed 10% discount on your monthly premium.
Panic Assistance in the OUTsurance app sends the closest medical or armed-response unit to your location, 24/7, at no extra cost to policyholders. You can add up to three friends or family members.
The app also lets you do the vehicle inspection needed to secure cover with a couple of photos, so you do not have to visit an inspection centre.
Excess, exclusions and non-disclosure traps
Your excess is what you pay towards each claim. OUTsurance says comprehensive has a fixed excess but does not publish a rand figure, so confirm the amount on your quote and schedule, not at claim stage. On Essential the R3 370 first amount not covered applies.
Claims can be reduced or rejected for the usual reasons: driving without a valid licence, drink driving, using a private car for business or e-hailing without disclosure, and non-disclosure of material facts. If you gave wrong or incomplete information when taking out or updating the policy, a later claim can be repudiated. Keep your regular driver, use and overnight parking details accurate.
How OUTsurance car insurance compares
Use this as an at-a-glance summary. Your price depends on your car, area, age and driving, so it is not a quote.

| Cover types | Comprehensive; Essential (unfinanced cars older than five years, valued under R150,000) |
| Excess | Comprehensive: fixed excess, amount not published. Essential: R3 370 first amount not covered |

Claims, complaints and your rights
Claim directly through the OUTsurance app or call centre. Report promptly, get a claim number, photograph the scene and damage, and keep documents. Accident claims usually need a police case or accident reference number.
If OUTsurance rejects or underpays and internal channels do not resolve it, you can escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud (NFO), which absorbed the former Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI). Before buying, verify the insurer on the FSCA register so you know you are dealing with a regulated provider.
How to get an OUTsurance car insurance quote
Get an OUTsurance vehicle insurance quote through the OUTsurance website, app or call centre. The online quote is a form, after which an advisor phones you back with your premium. Have your vehicle details, regular driver, use and overnight parking address ready, since these affect price and cover.
We are an information site and not a broker, so we do not quote or sell. Compare OUTsurance against alternatives on matching cover and total cost, including any OUTbonus value, rather than on headline premium alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the OUTsurance contact number?
According to OUTsurance's website (checked 29 September 2026), for new quotes call 08 600 60 000, and for claims call 08 600 70 000. Confirm on the official site before calling, because numbers change.
What is OUTsurance Essential car insurance?
Essential is only for cars older than five years, not financed and valued at less than R150,000. It gives up to R1 million liability cover, theft and hijack cover, and cash accident damage up to 40% of retail value, less a R3 370 first amount not covered. It does not include Help@OUT roadside assistance.
How does the OUTbonus work?
After three consecutive claim-free years you receive 10% of your paid car premiums back in cash. After another two claim-free years you receive 10% of the premiums paid in that time, then 10% for every claim-free year after that. Any paid claim forfeits the bonus for that cycle.
Does OUTsurance include roadside assistance?
Comprehensive cover includes Help@OUT roadside assistance, 24/7, with an annual limit of R5 000 and a maximum of two incidents per OUTsured vehicle. Help@OUT is not covered under Essential.
What is SmartDrive@OUT?
It is a free app-based driving score. Once you have driven at least 200 km over five separate trips, it earns a guaranteed 10% discount on your monthly car insurance premium.
Does OUTsurance use a broker?
OUTsurance is mainly a direct insurer, so most people quote and claim online, on the app or by phone. Its contact page also mentions contacting your OUTsurance broker, so some clients do have one. We are an independent information site and do not sell policies.
What can cause an OUTsurance claim to be rejected?
Driving without a valid licence, drink driving, undisclosed business or e-hailing use, and non-disclosure of material facts can all lead to a claim being reduced or rejected. Keep your details accurate and read the wording.
What if OUTsurance rejects my claim unfairly?
Follow OUTsurance's internal complaints process first. If it is not resolved, take the dispute free of charge to the National Financial Ombud, which absorbed the former OSTI. The ombud can assess whether the rejection was fair.
