Absa car insurance is issued by Absa Insurance Company Limited and sold as two products: Absa idirect, a call-centre policy, and Absa Activate, which you buy and manage in an app, with a telematics device and cash back for good driving. Knowing which one you are dealing with tells you how you get a quote, who you phone and how claims are logged.

idirect works through a call centre and a call-me-back form. Activate is app-first, with a free telematics device that drives the cash-back rewards. Absa's pages do not describe a separate bank-channel motor product.

This review explains the difference, the excess and disclosure traps to watch, and how to get a quote. We are an independent information site, not a broker, so quotes go through Absa's own channels and you should confirm the details with Absa before you buy.

Absa idirect and Absa Activate

Absa Insurance Company Limited sells car cover as two products.

Absa idirect is a personalised call-centre experience. Absa lists premiums guaranteed for 12 months, a fixed excess from as low as R3 000, an open driver policy, 24-hour road emergency assistance and cash back payments that escalate after 3, 4 and 5 claim-free years.

Absa Activate is bought online and managed in the Activate app. A free telematics device is installed once one or more policy premiums have been paid, and Absa says you can get up to 40% cash back for your driving, plus an extra 10% for Absa clients.

Both are issued by the same insurer, so check your policy schedule and confirm the licence on the FSCA register.

Cover types and benefits

Absa's comprehensive car insurance page lists these benefits: discounts of up to 30%, fixed excesses regardless of your claim, no excess for windscreen chip repairs, optional car hire, an open driver policy, 24-hour emergency roadside and accident assistance, a jumpstart service and a digital vehicle inspection.

Activate adds a free telematics device with tracking if your car is stolen or hijacked, claims logged in the app and a Drive me home service. Activate does not cover motorcycles, caravans or trailers. Absa says to call 0860 20 21 22 to cover those.

We did not find third party cover levels described on the pages we checked. Ask Absa which cover types are on offer before you assume any. Optional items such as car hire are optional, so check your schedule to see what you actually have.

Excess, exclusions and non-disclosure traps

Excess is your share of each claim. For idirect, Absa lists a fixed excess from as low as R3 000. For Activate, Absa says a basic excess is on the policy schedule and additional excesses may apply, so read the schedule to see what applies to you.

Non-disclosure is the most common reason claims are reduced or declined. If your overnight parking, regular driver or vehicle use does not match your declaration, even an honest error can cost you. Standard exclusions such as driving over the alcohol limit, an invalid licence and wear and tear apply. Read the exclusions section before you need it.

How idirect and Activate compare

Indicative only. Premiums depend on your car, area, age and claims history, so get a real quote.

Pros and cons

On the upside, idirect gives you a person to talk to and a fixed excess. Activate rewards careful driving and lets you run the policy from your phone. Absa lists a free windscreen chip repair and an open driver policy among the benefits.

The trade-offs: Activate cash back depends on a telematics device measuring your driving, so it will not suit everyone. idirect does not include telematics. Cash back is a reward, not a discount you can count on up front. Compare Absa with at least two or three competing quotes on like-for-like cover and excess before committing.

Quoting, claiming and escalation

As an independent information site and not a broker, we direct you to Absa's own channels. Get an Activate quote online. For idirect, use the call-me-back form or phone 0860 20 21 22. Absa's pages do not state a branch route for car quotes. Have your vehicle, licence and address details ready.

Log claims promptly and keep a reference, photos and any police case number. For idirect, phone 0860 20 21 22 or email [email protected]. For Activate, log the claim in the app or email [email protected]. If a claim is declined or short-paid and Absa's internal complaints process does not resolve it, you can escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud, which now handles short-term insurance complaints previously dealt with by OSTI.

How does Absa Activate cash back work?
