Standard Bank car insurance is a broker service, not a policy the bank underwrites itself. Standard Bank Insurance Brokers (FSP 224), part of the Standard Bank Group, sources up to 5 quotes for you, and the insurer whose quote you accept carries the risk.
The five insurers named on Standard Bank's page are Auto & General, First For Women, Hollard, King Price and Standard Insurance Limited. That matters because claims go to the insurer that issued your policy, and each insurer has its own claims number.
This review explains how the broker route works, what Standard Bank does and does not publish, and where the trade-offs sit. We are an independent information site, not a broker, so confirm the details with Standard Bank or the insurer before you buy.
What Standard Bank car insurance actually is
For cars, Standard Bank acts as a broker. Standard Bank Insurance Brokers sources up to 5 quotes from Auto & General, First For Women, Hollard, King Price and Standard Insurance Limited. The cover is underwritten by the insurer whose quote you accept. There is no single Standard Bank underwriter behind every policy.
Standard Insurance Limited (FSP 33348) is also part of the Standard Bank Group. The other four are separate insurers. Standard Bank says premiums are based on your personal risk profile.
Read your policy schedule to see who the underwriter is, because that insurer is bound by the contract. Confirm its licence on the FSCA register before you rely on any cover.

Cover types and what is included
Standard Bank's page describes two levels. Comprehensive covers loss or damage caused by collision, theft, fire or storms. Limited cover is either third party only (damage to the other person's vehicle in an accident) or third party plus loss or damage from theft or fire.
Comprehensive is the wider option and the one that deals with damage to your own car. Extras such as car hire or credit shortfall are not described on Standard Bank's pages, so they depend on the insurer and product you choose. Check your schedule line by line.

Excess, exclusions and non-disclosure traps
Excess is the amount you pay towards each claim. Standard Bank does not publish excess amounts, because the excess comes from the insurer whose quote you accept. Ask what the basic excess is and whether extra excesses apply, for example for young or inexperienced drivers. These can stack, so your real out-of-pocket cost can be higher than the headline figure.
The most common reason claims get reduced or rejected is non-disclosure: getting your overnight parking address, regular driver or vehicle use wrong, even unintentionally. Answer every question honestly and update the insurer when things change. Read the exclusions section too, because items like wear and tear, driving over the legal alcohol limit and an expired licence are common carve-outs.
The broker route compared with going direct
Indicative only. We do not know what any one quote will cost you, so get real quotes and compare them like for like.
| Feature | Standard Bank (broker) | Going direct to one insurer |
|---|---|---|
| Who quotes | Standard Bank Insurance Brokers, up to 5 quotes | One insurer |
| Who underwrites | The insurer whose quote you accept | That insurer |
| Who pays claims | The insurer that issued the policy | That insurer |
| Claims contact | Separate line for each of the five insurers | One line |
| Quote route | Call-me-back form (07:00 to 19:00) or the Insurance App | The insurer's own channels |
| Rewards | UCount Rewards members earn Tiering Points for qualifying policies | Varies by insurer |
Pros and cons to weigh up
On the plus side, one request can bring back several quotes from named insurers, and you deal with a broker who is part of a bank you may already use. UCount Rewards members earn Tiering Points on qualifying insurance policies. If you like one relationship for banking and quotes, that convenience is real.
The trade-offs: claims do not go to a central Standard Bank desk, so you need the claims number of the insurer that issued your policy. A broker quote is also not automatically cheaper or dearer than going direct. Compare it with at least one or two quotes you get yourself.
How to get a quote and make a claim
We are an information site and not a broker, so quote through Standard Bank's own channels. Its Insurance Brokers page has a call-me-back form, and the contact centre works from 07:00 to 19:00. The Standard Bank Insurance App also gets quotes. Standard Bank's pages do not mention a branch route for car quotes. Have your vehicle details, licence and address handy.
Claims go to the insurer that issued your policy. Standard Bank lists Auto & General 0861 600 224, First For Women 0861 111 805, Hollard 0860 000 351, King Price 0860 005 500 and Standard Insurance Limited 0860 123 444. The app is described as letting you link an existing Car and Home policy and register car insurance claims, and Standard Insurance Limited is the insurer behind it. If your policy is with one of the other four, use that insurer's claims line. Keep a case reference, photos and any police case number for theft or accident claims.
If your claim is rejected
If you believe a claim was unfairly declined or short-paid, first use the insurer's internal complaints process and ask for the decision in writing with reasons. Keep all correspondence.
If you are still unhappy, you can escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud, which now handles short-term insurance complaints previously dealt with by OSTI (the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance). The Ombud is independent and the service costs you nothing.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Standard Bank Insurance contact number?
According to Standard Bank Insurance's website (checked 29 September 2026), for new quotes call 0860 123 999, and for claims call 0860 123 999. The car insurance pages show different numbers for claims and the emergency helpline, so confirm on the official site before calling.
Who underwrites Standard Bank car insurance?
No single insurer does. Standard Bank Insurance Brokers sources up to 5 quotes from Auto & General, First For Women, Hollard, King Price and Standard Insurance Limited, and the insurer whose quote you accept is the underwriter. Your policy schedule names it.
How do I get a Standard Bank car insurance quote?
Request a call back on Standard Bank's Insurance Brokers page (the contact centre works from 07:00 to 19:00), or use the Standard Bank Insurance App. We are an independent information site and not a broker, so we cannot quote you directly.
Is Standard Bank car insurance cheaper than going direct?
We cannot say. Standard Bank sources up to 5 quotes, which lets you compare, but the price you get depends on your risk profile and the insurer. Compare at least one or two quotes from outside the broker route before deciding.
Where do I claim?
Claims go to the insurer that issued your policy. Standard Bank lists Auto & General 0861 600 224, First For Women 0861 111 805, Hollard 0860 000 351, King Price 0860 005 500 and Standard Insurance Limited 0860 123 444.
What if I disagree with a claim decision?
Use the insurer's internal complaints process first and get reasons in writing. If still unresolved, escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud, which now covers short-term insurance complaints formerly handled by OSTI.
Does it include car hire and roadside assistance?
Standard Bank's pages do not list car hire as a feature. Its contact page does show an emergency assist, roadside number. What your policy includes depends on the insurer and product, so read your schedule and ask at quote stage.
