Sanlam does not sell private car insurance under its own brand: it is a life insurance, investment and financial planning group, and the vehicle cover people associate with the name is written by Santam or its direct brand MiWay, or placed by a Sanlam adviser with a licensed short-term insurer.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. The company named on your policy schedule is the one that has to pay your claim, sets your excess and decides how your car is valued if it is written off. A trusted brand on the letterhead is not the same thing as the insurer carrying the risk.

This page explains what Sanlam itself offers, where car insurance sits in the group, and the handful of things to confirm before you sign anything arranged under the Sanlam name. We are an independent information site, not a broker, so we do not quote or sell on anyone's behalf.

What Sanlam actually sells to individuals

Sanlam's own personal range is life-side cover and savings: life insurance, disability and severe illness cover, income protection, funeral cover, credit life and health-related solutions, alongside retirement and investment products.

Car and household insurance are short-term (non-life) products, and Sanlam's personal pages route those enquiries to its advice businesses rather than to a Sanlam-underwritten motor policy. So if you search for a Sanlam car insurance quote, what you will usually be offered is either a Santam or MiWay policy, or a policy an adviser has placed with a licensed short-term insurer of their choosing.

What to know about Sanlam in 2026

  • Sanlam's own personal insurance range is life-side only: life insurance, disability, severe illness, cancer, income protection, funeral cover, credit life and health solutions. No motor product is listed. (sanlamonline.co.za)
  • Sanlam's Claims centre covers life and funeral, medical and disability, and work and income-related claims. There is no motor claims route on it. (sanlamonline.co.za)
  • Sanlam's site sends short-term insurance (motor, home, contents) enquiries to SFP, a Sanlam subsidiary described as a 2010-established brokerage. SFP lists motor vehicles among the covers it arranges and has a call-back form. (sfpadvice.co.za)
  • SFP's page lists 'Motor vehicles' first among what falls under short-term insurance. (sfpadvice.co.za)
  • SFP is an authorised financial services provider and a subsidiary of the Sanlam Group (legal name Succession Financial Planning Advisory Services (Pty) Ltd), so it is an intermediary, not an insurer. (sfpadvice.co.za)
  • Sanlam holds 62.3% of Santam, the short-term insurer. (santam.co.za)
  • MiWay is a direct general insurer that underwrites mainly personal lines; MiWay Blink is described as a fully digital car insurance offering. Both appear in Santam's business portfolio. (santam.co.za)
  • Sanlam's own licence statement covers life insurance business only: Sanlam Life Insurance Limited is licensed to conduct life insurance business. (sanlamonline.co.za)

Where car insurance sits in the Sanlam group

Sanlam is the controlling shareholder of Santam, which is South Africa's largest short-term insurer. Santam in turn owns MiWay, the direct, self-service brand that sells online and by phone. Both hold their own insurance licences, and both rate and settle claims on their own rules.

The practical effect for you is that the group offers two very different ways to buy the same kind of cover. Santam is broker-led, with an adviser between you and the insurer. MiWay is direct, which usually means a lower cost of distribution but no one acting for you at claim time. Neither is automatically better, and both should be quoted against insurers outside the group before you decide.

What a Sanlam adviser can and cannot do

A Sanlam adviser or financial planner can help you work out how much cover you need and can arrange short-term insurance for you. What they cannot do is carry the risk themselves. They act as an intermediary, and the insurer they place you with is the party that underwrites the policy.

Ask two direct questions before you sign. First, which licensed insurers is the adviser able to place business with, because a single-insurer mandate is a different service from an open-market comparison. Second, how the adviser is paid, whether that is commission built into the premium, a fee, or both. Neither answer is a problem in itself, but you should know it.

Excess, valuation and the exclusions that catch people

Whichever insurer ends up on your schedule, the same fundamentals decide whether a claim pays. Read the basic excess and any additional excesses for young, new or unlisted drivers. Check whether the car is insured at retail, market or agreed value, because on a write-off those can differ by thousands of rand.

Then read the conditions you have to keep. Common ones are an accurate overnight parking address, a correctly named regular driver, a required tracking device on higher-theft models, and a declaration if the car is used for business. Non-disclosure is still the most common reason South African motor claims are rejected, and it is entirely avoidable.

How to get a quote and check the company is licensed

Go to the insurer's own channels rather than a lead-capture form. Santam works through accredited brokers and its own site, MiWay sells direct, and Sanlam advisers can be contacted through Sanlam's website. We deliberately do not publish phone numbers, because they change.

Before you pay anything, confirm two things. The insurer should appear on the list of licensed insurers published by the Prudential Authority, and any broker, adviser or underwriting manager should appear as an authorised financial services provider on the FSCA register. Both checks are free and take a few minutes.

If something goes wrong

If a claim is rejected or handled badly, start with the insurer's own internal complaints process and ask for the decision in writing. If that does not resolve it, you can refer the dispute free of charge to the National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa (nfosa.co.za), which took over short-term insurance complaints from the former Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI) when the schemes merged in 2024. Complaints about the advice you were given, rather than the claim itself, go to the FAIS Ombud. Market conduct is regulated by the FSCA, and insurers themselves are licensed under the Insurance Act by the Prudential Authority.

Frequently asked questions

Does Sanlam offer car insurance in South Africa?

Not under the Sanlam brand as a private motor policy. Sanlam's own personal range is life-side cover, savings and investments. Car cover in the Sanlam stable comes from Santam or MiWay, or from a policy a Sanlam adviser places with a licensed short-term insurer.

Is Santam the same company as Sanlam?

No. They are separate listed businesses with similar names. Sanlam is the controlling shareholder of Santam, but Santam holds its own insurance licence, sets its own premiums and pays its own claims.

Who underwrites a car policy arranged by a Sanlam adviser?

A licensed short-term insurer, named on your policy schedule. Ask the adviser which insurer it is and which insurers they are mandated to place business with before you sign.

How do I get a Sanlam car insurance quote?

Contact a Sanlam adviser through Sanlam's website, or quote directly with Santam through a broker and with MiWay online. Compare at least three quotes on the same cover level, including insurers outside the group.

Is MiWay part of Sanlam?

MiWay is a subsidiary of Santam, and Sanlam is Santam's controlling shareholder, so MiWay sits within the wider Sanlam group. MiWay operates on its own licence with its own pricing and underwriting rules.

Does Sanlam cover my car if I have a Sanlam life policy?

No. A life policy pays on death, disability or illness and does nothing for vehicle damage or theft. You need a separate short-term motor policy with a licensed non-life insurer.

Where do I complain about a policy sold under the Sanlam name?

Complain to the insurer named on the schedule first. If the dispute is about the claim, escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud. If it is about the advice you were given, take it to the FAIS Ombud.
