FNB car insurance is a division of FirstRand Bank Limited and is insured by FirstRand Short-term Insurance Limited. It is built around the FNB App, and FNB's car insurance brochure says it is for individuals with an FNB or RMB Private Bank transactional account and a valid driver's licence.
The main draws are convenience and the eBucks link. The brochure says you can earn up to R8 a litre back in eBucks on fuel at Engen and up to 15% of your monthly premiums back in eBucks. That can help, but it should not be the only reason you pick a policy.
This review explains who can apply, what the brochure lists as cover and exclusions, and how to quote and claim. We are independent and not a broker, so quotes go through FNB's own channels. FNB's website blocked our automated checks, so much of this comes from FNB's car insurance brochure, which is undated. Confirm the current terms with FNB.
How FNB car insurance works
FNB Car Insurance is a division of FirstRand Bank Limited. The insurer is FirstRand Short-term Insurance Limited, a licensed non-life insurer, so FNB is both the seller and part of the group that carries the risk. Check your policy schedule for the named underwriter and confirm the licence on the FSCA register.
According to FNB's brochure, you get a quote in the FNB App under Product Shop, For Me, Insure, and you claim through Secure Chat or the Insurance tab. For people who already bank with FNB, that single-app experience is the core appeal.
What to know about FNB in 2026

- Optional scratch and dent cover has no excess and pays up to R4 500 per claim; tyre and rim cover also has no excess. (fnb.co.za)
- Main exclusions include wear and tear or mechanical breakdown, and vehicles used to earn an income such as Uber. (fnb.co.za)
- Launched Feb 2022: FNB and RMB Private Bank customers could get up to 15% of premiums back in eBucks and up to 20% off car premiums if they work from home (news report, launch-time terms). (fanews.co.za)
eBucks and the rewards angle
FNB's brochure says eBucks is built in. You can earn up to R8 a litre back in eBucks on fuel at Engen, and up to 15% of your monthly car insurance premiums back in eBucks, in five levels from 1% to 15%.
Treat rewards as a bonus, not the deciding factor. The level you reach depends on your eBucks rules, those rules can change, and a cheaper base premium elsewhere can outweigh the rewards. Read the current eBucks terms before you assume a specific benefit.

Checked on 29 September 2026 against FNB's official website. Numbers and channels change, so confirm on the linked page before you call. FNB will not ask you to pay into a new bank account over the phone; hang up and call the official number if anything feels off.

Cover types and benefits
FNB's brochure lists three cover options: comprehensive, [third party fire and theft](/claims/third-party-fire-and-theft-claim/), and third party only.
The base cover it lists includes accidental damage, 24/7 roadside assistance, emergency medical assistance and trauma counselling, windscreen and permanent window glass, towing, storage and delivery after repairs, damage caused by animals (not pets), theft and hijacking, locks and keys, and natural disasters.
There are extras. The car rental excess waiver means you pay a rental excess equal to your own car insurance excess, capped at R30 000 per incident. If your basic excess is under R4 500, R4 500 applies. Optional scratch and dent cover has no excess and pays up to R4 500 per claim, and tyre and rim cover also has no excess. Extras are optional, so check your schedule to see what you actually have.
Excess, exclusions and non-disclosure
Excess is what you pay towards each claim. FNB's brochure does not state a basic excess amount for the policy. The R4 500 figure applies only to the car rental excess waiver. Ask at quote stage what your basic excess is and whether additional excesses apply, for example for young or inexperienced drivers.
The brochure lists main exclusions, including wear and tear or mechanical breakdown, and vehicles used to earn an income or modified for use in business or trade, such as Uber or similar services.
Non-disclosure is the biggest claim killer. If your overnight parking, main driver or vehicle use does not match what you declared, a claim can be reduced or rejected even if the mistake was honest. Read the exclusions section carefully.

Who can and cannot get FNB car insurance
FNB's brochure says cover is for individuals with an FNB or RMB Private Bank transactional account and a valid driver's licence. You must be a South African citizen or permanent resident with a green bar-coded ID or Smart ID card.
If you do not bank with FNB, this product is not open to you, so quote other insurers. Vehicles used to earn an income, for example on Uber or similar services, are listed as an exclusion. If you drive for income, tell any insurer up front and ask what cover is available.
Quoting, claiming and escalation
As an independent information site and not a broker, we point you to FNB's own channels for a quote. FNB's brochure describes getting one in the FNB App under Product Shop, For Me, Insure. We could not confirm a call-centre or website quote route, because FNB's website blocked our checks. Have your vehicle, licence and address details ready.
For claims, use Secure Chat or the Insurance tab in the FNB App, or call 087 312 0001, and keep a reference, photos and any police case number. If a claim is declined or short-paid and the insurer's internal complaints process does not resolve it, you can escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud, which now handles short-term insurance complaints formerly dealt with by OSTI.
