Dotsure (dotsure.co.za) is a direct online insurer whose car product is called Name Your Price. You switch off cover you do not need, such as weekend, night, hail or windscreen cover, and some limits are based on monthly distance. Name Your Price needs a telematics device that reports your driving. Dotsure also sells a separate extended motor warranty.

If you know the insurer as Oakhurst, it is the same company under a new name. The Oakhurst brand was retired on 1 October 2020 and the company is now Dotsure Limited.

This review covers how Name Your Price works, the telematics device, the excess and disclosure traps that apply to any motor cover, and the motor warranty. We are an independent information site and not a broker, so for a quote or the Dotsure contact number use Dotsure's own channels.

How Dotsure works, and the Oakhurst rename

Dotsure is a direct online insurer. You typically quote, buy and manage your policy online, and claims are logged through the Manage Portal, which is a website and not an app.

Oakhurst rename: from 1 October 2020, Oakhurst Insurance Company Limited merged its brand with dotsure.co.za, its direct arm, and became Dotsure Limited. Oakhurst policies stayed in force with the same cover. Searching for Oakhurst insurance, or its old website, now leads to Dotsure. If you still hold Oakhurst paperwork, Dotsure's contact details in the table below are the ones to use.

Confirm the underwriting entity on your policy schedule and check the licence on the FSCA register before you rely on cover.

What to know about Dotsure in 2026

  • Name Your Price car insurance: switch off cover you do not need (windscreen, hail, night driving, weekend cover, frequent driver, single driver) to save up to 40% on premium. (dotsure.co.za)
  • Name Your Price requires a telematics device (Smart Driver Tag or Smart-Box) that reports driving behaviour; it can be supplied with the policy and its monthly fee is debited with the premium. (dotsure.co.za)
  • Depending on risk profile, Name Your Price limitations can include excluding hail or windscreen damage, limiting cover to up to 500 or 1,000 km per month, and excluding incidents at certain times of day or on weekends. (dotsure.co.za)
  • 20% lifetime discount on the car insurance premium when you buy online. (dotsure.co.za)
  • Eligibility: valid SA driver's licence (no learner's), driver aged 20 to 80, car no older than 20 years, GVM 3,500kg or less, and not used for courier, driving school or security services. (dotsure.co.za)
  • The basic excess can be a percentage of the claim with a minimum amount; it cannot be waived, but the paid add-on Excess Buster covers part of it. (dotsure.co.za)
  • Limited credit shortfall cover is included in all vehicle policies at no extra charge (activated by SMS); there is no traditional car hire benefit, but the optional Platinum Cover pays cash towards car hire. (dotsure.co.za)
  • Optional add-ons include Scratchzone (minor scratches and dents), Roadwise Tyre and Rim, Body Protector and Accident Protect (cash benefit after a valid claim). (dotsure.co.za)

Name Your Price and the telematics device

Name Your Price lets you customise your cover and switch off parts you do not need. Dotsure says this can save up to 40% on your premium, subject to its terms. Depending on your risk profile, the limits can include excluding hail or windscreen damage, capping cover at 500 or 1,000 km a month, and excluding incidents at certain times of day or on weekends.

It requires a telematics device that reports driving behaviour. There are two options. The Smart Driver Tag runs month-to-month with your insurance, and its subscription ends if you cancel the policy. The Smart-Box is fitted on a 36-month contract between you and Netstar, so you keep paying if you cancel the insurance.

Worth checking before you buy: whether your driving pattern really benefits from the limits, and what you owe on the device if you leave.

Cover, excess and claims

Dotsure lists cover for accidental damage, damage to others, fire, theft or hijacking, key replacement, non-standard accessories and vehicle credit cover. The car page does not describe [third party fire and theft](/claims/third-party-fire-and-theft-claim/) or third party only cover, so ask before assuming either exists.

The basic excess can be a percentage of the claim with a minimum amount. It cannot be waived, but the paid Excess Buster add-on covers part of it. Limited credit shortfall cover is included in all vehicle policies at no extra charge. There is no traditional car hire benefit, but the optional Platinum Cover pays cash towards car hire.

To claim, log in to the Manage Portal with your ID number and the one-time PIN Dotsure sends to the phone number on your policy. Dotsure aims to process claims within 5 working days.

Non-disclosure is the leading cause of reduced or rejected claims. If your overnight parking, regular driver, mileage or vehicle use does not match your declaration, even an honest error can cost you cover.

Dotsure motor warranty

Dotsure also sells an extended car warranty. It covers mechanical and electrical breakdown, and it is separate from car insurance. The page is dotsure.co.za/motor-warranty and the quote site is warranty.dotsure.co.za.

  • Cover for more than 60 mechanical and electrical components, for cars up to 15 years old with up to 300,000km.
  • Up to R400,000 on components, with example limits of R45,000 for the engine, R24,000 for the turbo, R36,000 for the gearbox, R20,000 for the cambelt and R35,000 for the differential.
  • Claims are paid to you, not the mechanic, with an average turnaround of 3 days once documents are received.
  • Roadside help after a breakdown: 24/7 towing to a place of safety and up to R500 towards storage.
  • Optional extras: Alternative Transport Allowance of up to R5,000 and ServiceXtender of up to R4,000 towards a service.

Warranty claims are logged in the Manage Portal, where Warranty is a claim type, or through the call centre on 0861 368 7873. A warranty is not insurance, so read the policy wording for what it excludes and what it requires of you.

How Dotsure car insurance compares

This is orientation, not a quote. Premiums depend on your car, area, age, claims history and the limits you choose, so get a real quote and compare on like-for-like cover.

Pros and cons

On the plus side, Dotsure lets you trim cover you do not use, publishes clear eligibility rules, includes limited credit shortfall cover and offers a separate motor warranty. Claims are handled online.

The trade-offs: Name Your Price needs a telematics device, the Smart-Box comes with a 36-month contract, there is no general app, the limits can exclude cover such as weekend or night incidents, and drivers outside the 20 to 80 age band do not qualify. Compare against two or three other insurers on like-for-like cover and excess before deciding.

Is Dotsure the same as Oakhurst?

How does Dotsure Name Your Price work?

What if Dotsure declines my claim?
