Naked is an app-first South African car insurer, not an app-only one. You can quote and buy on the website or in the app, and you can call 0860 995 125 or email [email protected] if you would rather speak to someone. People search for it because of its flat excess, the CoverPause feature and its flat-fee model.

Naked Financial Technology Pty Ltd is the authorised financial services provider, and the policies are underwritten by Hollard Specialist Insurance Limited. Check both names when you verify the cover on the FSCA register.

This review is independent. We do not sell Naked policies and earn nothing from them, because we are an information site, not a broker. Cover, excess and exclusions are set per quote, so read your own policy wording and schedule.

Who Naked is and who underwrites it

Naked is app-first: you can quote, buy, manage cover and claim in the app, which is available on iOS, Google Play and Huawei AppGallery. It is not app-only. The website also handles quotes and purchases, and there is a phone line and a help email.

Naked Financial Technology Pty Ltd is the authorised FSP (FSP 48822). The policies are underwritten by Hollard Specialist Insurance Limited, a licensed non-life insurer (FSP 25511). Hollard is also one of the investors named on Naked's About page. The financial backing and licensing of the cover sit with the underwriter, so know both names when you check the FSCA register.

What to know about Naked in 2026

  • Comprehensive cover is advertised from R300pm and third-party cover from R70pm; example premiums for popular 2025 cars range from R507pm (Suzuki Swift) to R1536pm (Toyota Hilux), stated as indicative only. (naked.insure)
  • CoverPause: you can pause the accident part of comprehensive cover while the car is parked safely at home and save up to 50% on premium; you switch it back on in the app before driving. (naked.insure)
  • Excess is a flat amount you choose from a range and can change in the app; Naked says there are no additional excesses on any product, so the excess you choose is the most you pay on a valid claim. (naked.insure)
  • Glass excess: claims under R2,000 carry no excess, claims between R2,000 and R3,000 carry an excess of the claim amount less R2,000, and claims over R3,000 have a R1,000 excess. (naked.insure)
  • No named drivers: anyone with a valid licence and your permission can drive, but the regular driver must be kept up to date in the app. (naked.insure)
  • The online quote is final and you can buy on the spot; optional car hire and shortfall cover are available on comprehensive. (naked.insure)
  • Flat-fee model: Naked takes a fixed fee from the premium, claims are paid from a separate pool and any leftover goes to causes customers choose rather than shareholders. (naked.insure)
  • Referral reward: up to R1,000 per referred friend who stays with Naked for 3 months. (naked.insure)

The flat fee model and what transparency means here

Naked says it takes a fixed fee from your premium. Claims are paid from a separate pool, and if claims are lower than expected the leftover money goes to causes customers choose, not to shareholders.

This is a design choice, not a guarantee about any individual claim. Your claim is still assessed against the policy wording, the information you disclosed and your excess. Treat the fee model as something to understand, not a reason to skip reading the cover terms.

CoverPause and shortfall cover

CoverPause lets you pause the accident part of your comprehensive cover while the car is parked safely at home, which Naked says can save up to 50% on your premium. You turn it back on in the app before you drive. The pages we read only describe the accident part being paused, so ask Naked exactly which risks stay covered while you are paused.

Optional car hire and shortfall cover are available on comprehensive. Shortfall cover is designed for a financed car, where a write-off payout can leave you owing more than the car was worth. Price it if you are still paying off the vehicle.

Excess, exclusions and the non-disclosure trap

Naked uses one flat excess. You choose it from a range and can change it in the app. Naked says there are no additional excesses on any product, so the excess you choose is the most you pay on a valid claim.

Glass claims follow their own scale: under R2,000 there is no excess, between R2,000 and R3,000 the excess is the claim amount less R2,000, and over R3,000 it is R1,000.

Naked does not use named drivers, but the regular driver must be kept up to date in the app. Non-disclosure is the biggest avoidable problem: if the app asks who drives the car, where it parks overnight or about modifications, answer accurately, because wrong answers can lead to a rejected claim later. Read your own exclusions.

How Naked car insurance compares

This is orientation, not a quote. Your real terms depend on your car, area, driver profile and history.

Pros, cons and next steps

Pros: an app-first experience with a phone line if you want one, one flat excess you choose, no named drivers, CoverPause, a final online quote and an established underwriter.

Cons: the app is the centre of the experience, so it suits people comfortable managing insurance digitally. You still need to read the wording, and as with any direct cover you do your own comparison shopping. We also found no dedicated claims page, so claims run through the app and the emergency number.

Because we are not a broker, get your quote on Naked's own website or app. Before buying, check Naked and the underwriter Hollard on the FSCA register. If a claim is rejected and the internal complaints process does not resolve it, you can escalate for free to the National Financial Ombud, which absorbed the former Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (OSTI).
