Through a registered broker, Bryte's call-back form, or the Oneplan online quote for standalone car cover

Bryte Insurance Company Limited is a South African short-term insurer owned by Fairfax Financial Holdings, and it does sell personal car cover. Its site, brytesa.com, has a personal insurance range with car and vehicle cover that is arranged through brokers, and standalone car cover through its partner Oneplan Underwriting Managers, which has an online quote form. Bryte's main focus is still business insurance.

The Bryte brand launched in 2017 after Fairfax bought Zurich's South African business, so you may still see it described as the former Zurich South Africa. The official site is brytesa.com. Other websites called Bryte are unrelated businesses.

This review sets out what Bryte offers private motorists, who it suits, and how claims work. We are an independent information site and not a broker, so we point you to Bryte's own channels and to a registered broker.

What Bryte Insurance is

Bryte is a licensed South African short-term insurer, and a subsidiary of Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited of Toronto. It launched as a brand in 2017 when Fairfax bought Zurich's South African business. Its own site calls Bryte a risk specialist focusing on business insurance, which explains why most of its cover is arranged through brokers.

It is not commercial-only. The site has a personal insurance section that includes car and vehicle cover. Confirm Bryte's licence on the FSCA register and check that any broker you use is registered too.

  • Specialised vehicle covers exist for watercraft and for classic and collectible cars. (brytesa.com)

Personal car cover: brokers and Oneplan

Bryte's car and vehicle cover is split into personal lines for standard personal vehicles, combined personal and business cover for sole proprietors, and farming vehicles. There are also specialised covers for watercraft and for classic and collectible cars. These are arranged through a broker.

Standalone car insurance is offered through Oneplan Underwriting Managers. Bryte's car page links to Oneplan's online quote journey, so you can get a quote without a broker. Oneplan is a separate brand, so read its wording and check who underwrites your policy.

As an independent information site and not a broker, we cannot place cover for you. The quote routes are a registered broker, Bryte's call-back form or the Oneplan online quote.

Who Bryte suits

Bryte suits businesses, sole proprietors, farmers and owners of classic or specialist vehicles who want a broker to structure the cover. It also works for private motorists whose broker recommends it, or who want the Oneplan standalone car product.

If you only want to compare car prices online in minutes, a direct personal insurer may be quicker. Bryte does not publish consumer car excess amounts or a dedicated new quotes phone number, so you will get the detail from a broker or Oneplan.

Claims, excess and exclusions

The claims process starts with your broker. Report the loss to the broker, complete the claim form, then submit it to the broker or directly to Bryte. Bryte says motor and property claims that are not reported within 15 days need a reason for the late notification, so report quickly.

We found no published consumer car excess amounts, so the excess on your schedule is the one that counts. Ask for it in writing.

Non-disclosure can lead to reduced or rejected claims, so be accurate about use, drivers and where the car sleeps. Read the exclusions in your own wording. If a claim is declined or short-paid and the internal complaints process does not resolve it, escalate free of charge to the National Financial Ombud, which now handles short-term insurance complaints previously dealt with by OSTI.

Pros and cons

On the plus side, Bryte offers personal car cover as well as business cover, with specialised options for classic and collectible cars, a standalone route through Oneplan with an online quote, and 24/7 Bryte Assist.

The trade-offs for private motorists: most cover goes through a broker, there is no dedicated new quotes phone number and no consumer app that we found, and no consumer excess amounts are published. If you want simple, fast, comparable private car cover, compare Bryte or Oneplan against a couple of direct insurers before deciding.
