PSG does not underwrite car insurance: PSG Insure is the short-term insurance arm of PSG Financial Services, the JSE-listed advice group previously listed as PSG Konsult, and it works as an intermediary, placing your cover with a licensed insurer whose name appears on your policy schedule. Its advisers assess your risk and decide which insurers to approach.

That is a genuinely different product from buying direct. You get an adviser who can shop the market, structure cover properly and argue your corner at claim time. You also carry a layer of intermediary cost, and you should understand how that adviser is paid before you sign.

This page sets out what is publicly known about PSG in car insurance, how a broker-placed policy differs from a direct one, and the questions worth asking. We are an information site, not a broker, and we earn nothing from PSG or any insurer named here.

What PSG is in car insurance terms

PSG Financial Services is an advice-led financial group with three broad arms: wealth management, asset management and short-term insurance. The short-term arm, PSG Insure, has advisers around the country handling personal and commercial cover.

Its role is intermediation, not underwriting. PSG Insure assesses what you need, approaches insurers it has agreements with, and arranges the policy. It has been recognised in Santam's national broker awards, which tells you it places meaningful volume with the country's largest short-term insurer. It also runs an administration business for group and affinity schemes, some of which are underwritten by cell captive insurers such as Guardrisk.

What to know about PSG Insure in 2026

  • PSG's own site says it partners with leading insurers and supports clients with advice and assistance with claims (an intermediary model). (psg.co.za)
  • PSG Insure motor options are comprehensive, third-party, and third-party fire and theft, with value-added cover such as car hire, top-up cover, excess payments, windscreen repairs and tyre damage. (psg.co.za)
  • PSG's value-added Windscreen Solutions reimburses the basic windscreen excess, capped at R2750 per claim and two claims a year per vehicle, and only where the car is comprehensively insured. (psg.co.za)
  • PSG's Excess Solutions reimburses the basic theft and hijacking excess if the car is comprehensively insured; any other additional and voluntary excesses still apply. (psg.co.za)
  • PSG has an online 'Get a Quote' request form for motor, building, household contents and all-risk cover, where you choose 'Give me a quick call' or 'Send me a detailed quote', and can tick car hire and roadside assistance. It is a request form, not an instant priced quote. (psg.co.za)
  • The quote form asks whether you belong to BMW, ATKV or CentraSure affinity groups, so scheme-linked pricing exists. (psg.co.za)
  • Santam named PSG Wealth Financial Planning (Pty) Ltd National Broker of the Year for Personal Lines for the 2025 financial year. (psg.co.za)
  • The Public Servants Association's scheme for motor, homeowners and household cover is insured by Guardrisk and administered by PSG Insure Short-term Administration, with PSA Assist 24/7 and 30 days' car hire. (psa.co.za)

Broker, insurer, underwriting manager: why the label matters

South African motor insurance is sold through several different structures, and they carry different obligations towards you.

None of these are worse than the others, but you should always be able to name the licensed insurer that carries your risk. If nobody can tell you that, do not sign.

What a PSG adviser can do that a website cannot

A broker earns their place in three situations. The first is complicated risk: more than one vehicle, a classic or modified car, a car used partly for business, a household with young drivers, or cover that has to sit alongside a business policy.

The second is structuring. Choosing the valuation basis, setting a sensible excess, deciding whether credit shortfall cover is worth it and making sure the parking and driver details are correct is exactly where policies go wrong when people self-serve at speed.

The third is claim time. A broker who placed the business has a relationship with the underwriter and a mandate to act for you. That does not guarantee a rejected claim gets paid, but it means someone experienced is handling the correspondence instead of you.

How you pay for advice

Short-term insurance commission is normally built into the premium and regulated as a maximum percentage, so it is not usually an extra line you pay separately. Some brokers also charge an administration or policy fee, and commercial or scheme business can be arranged on a fee basis.

Ask for the total cost of the policy including any fees, and ask whether the adviser is remunerated more by one insurer than another. A reputable adviser will answer both questions without hesitation. Then compare the total against a direct quote on identical cover. If the broker route costs more, decide whether the advice and claims support is worth the difference to you. Often it is, sometimes it is not.

What to confirm before you sign a broker-placed policy

Get all of this in writing:

  • The licensed insurer carrying the risk, plus confirmation it appears on the Prudential Authority's list of licensed insurers
  • The adviser's FSP number, checked on the FSCA register
  • The full schedule: sum insured, valuation basis, basic excess and every additional excess
  • Conditions you must meet, such as a tracking device, overnight parking address or a named regular driver
  • Whether the policy is a standalone contract or membership of a group scheme, because scheme rules can change independently of you
  • Who to call at claim time, the broker or the insurer, and the after-hours route

Also keep a copy of the questions you were asked and the answers you gave. Non-disclosure disputes are much easier to win when you can show what you actually disclosed.

Complaints: two different doors

Broker-placed cover has two complaint routes and picking the right one saves months. If the dispute is about the claim decision itself, complain to the insurer, then refer it free of charge to the National Financial Ombud (nfosa.co.za), which absorbed the former Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance in 2024.

If the dispute is about the advice or the service you received, for example cover that was arranged incorrectly or a material fact the adviser never asked you about, that is a FAIS complaint and goes to the FAIS Ombud. Conduct by both insurers and advisers is regulated by the FSCA.

Frequently asked questions

Does PSG underwrite car insurance?

No. PSG Insure is a short-term insurance broker and adviser. It places your cover with a licensed insurer, and that insurer is named on your policy schedule and is the party that pays your claim.

Which insurer will PSG put me with?

It depends on your risk and the agreements PSG holds. PSG has been recognised in Santam's national broker awards, and it also administers schemes underwritten by insurers such as Guardrisk. Ask the adviser to name the insurer before you sign.

Is a PSG policy more expensive than buying direct?

It can be, because intermediary cost sits inside the premium. Whether it is worth it depends on how complex your risk is and how much you value advice and help at claim time. Compare the total cost against a direct quote on identical cover.

How do I get a PSG car insurance quote?

Contact a PSG Insure adviser through PSG's own website. It is an advice-led model rather than an instant online quote engine, so expect a conversation about your vehicles, drivers and existing cover.

Is PSG Insure the same as PSG Konsult?

PSG Insure is the short-term insurance arm of the group that was previously listed as PSG Konsult and is now PSG Financial Services. The wealth and asset management arms are separate businesses in the same group.

Who do I claim from on a PSG-arranged policy?

The insurer named on your schedule pays the claim, but your broker is usually the first call and will lodge and manage it for you. Confirm the after-hours claims number and the towing arrangement when the policy starts.

What if my PSG-arranged claim is rejected?

Dispute it with the insurer in writing, then take it free of charge to the National Financial Ombud. If the problem is the advice you were given rather than the claim decision, complain to the FAIS Ombud instead.
