Guardrisk is a licensed South African insurer that does not sell car insurance to the public under its own name. It calls itself the country's largest cell captive insurer, it is part of JSE-listed Momentum Group, and it underwrites policies that other businesses design, brand and distribute. If Guardrisk is named on your schedule as the insurer, Guardrisk is the insurer on your policy.
That is why people search for it. You bought motor cover, a scratch and dent product or a warranty from a dealership, retailer, broker or affinity scheme, and a name you have never heard of turned up on the paperwork. That is not a mistake and it is not a red flag on its own.
This page explains what a cell captive is, what Guardrisk says about its own motor products, and how it changes the practical questions you should ask about your own policy. We are an independent information site, not a broker, and the contact details below are for enquiries, not quotes.
What Guardrisk is
Guardrisk Insurance Company Limited is a licensed non-life insurer, and it is part of Momentum Group Limited, which is listed on the JSE. Guardrisk says it pioneered the cell captive concept in South Africa in 1993 and is the country's largest cell captive insurer.
What it does not do is compete for your business with a television advert and an online quote form. It describes itself as generally an outsourced insurance company that partners with other financial service providers and insurance experts. So we know of no Guardrisk-branded private car policy you can buy off the shelf. If you hold cover that Guardrisk underwrites, it came to you through another business.
Beware of name confusion. Guardrisk warns that a third-party company trading under the GUARD RISK name is not associated or affiliated with it.

What a cell captive means in plain terms
A cell captive lets a business own an insurance product without setting up an insurance company. The business buys shares in a ring-fenced cell inside the insurer. The insurer provides the licence and the underwriting, and the cell owner brings the customers and takes a share of the profit or loss on that book.
That is how a dealership, retailer, broker or association can sell cover under its own badge, and it is one route for embedded products such as scratch and dent, tyre and rim cover and warranties.
For you, the important part is legal rather than commercial. The licensed insurer named on your schedule is the party contractually obliged to pay a valid claim. If your schedule does not name the insurer, ask for it in writing before you pay another premium.

Guardrisk's motor products, as it describes them
Guardrisk's own Guardrisk Motor product is a specialist facility for corporate and commercial motor fleets, and it names ambulance services and security companies. It is not private car cover. The 0860 222 555 number in the table above is the claims line for those fleets.
Carsure is a Guardrisk product sold to insurers and brokers. It gives the insured a guaranteed Avis Rent-a-Car courtesy car while their vehicle is repaired or after theft, so you would meet it through your insurer or broker, not from Guardrisk directly.
Guardrisk's underwriting managers page shows where dealer-sold motor add-ons sit. It lists Customer Loyalty Consultants, which offers excess buy-downs, car hire, tyre warranties and scratch and dent, and Auto Trade Underwriting Managers, which serves motor traders.
Guardrisk's claims page covers only the products on its General Insurance page. For any other Guardrisk-underwritten product, it says to contact the intermediary or administrator named in your policy schedule.
How this compares to buying from a direct insurer
Structural comparison, indicative only.
| Feature | Cell captive policy (for example Guardrisk-underwritten) | Direct insurer | Broker-placed conventional policy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brand you see | The distributor's brand | The insurer's brand | The insurer's brand |
| Licensed insurer | Guardrisk or similar, on the schedule | The same company you bought from | A conventional insurer |
| Where it is sold | Dealership, retailer, scheme, broker, app | Insurer's own channels | Broker's office |
| Product design | Tailored to the distributor's customers | Standardised menu | Tailored by the broker |
| Price comparability | Often hard to compare like for like | Easy to compare | Broker compares for you |
| Who handles the claim | Often an administrator or UMA on the insurer's behalf | The insurer | Broker lodges, insurer decides |
| Complaints | NFO, plus FAIS Ombud for the sale | NFO | NFO, plus FAIS Ombud for advice |
The weakness of the cell captive route is not safety, it is comparability. Bespoke products are designed to be sold at a specific moment, usually when you are signing something else, and they are the hardest cover in the market to price-check.
Why Guardrisk may appear on your schedule
You may meet Guardrisk in places like a dealer-arranged product bought in the finance and insurance office, such as scratch and dent, tyre and rim or a warranty, an affinity or group scheme, or a broker or underwriting manager scheme. Embedded cover attached to a retail purchase is another route.
None of that changes what you should read. Find the insured events, the exclusions, the claim limits per event and in total, the excess, the waiting period and who to phone. Then decide whether the cover is worth the premium.
What to check on a Guardrisk-underwritten policy
Ask for these in writing:
- The full policy wording, not the brochure
- Who administers claims, the distributor, an administrator or the insurer, and the after-hours number
- Claim limits: per claim, per year and for the life of the policy
- Waiting periods and any inspection required at inception
- Whether the premium is paid monthly or was added to a finance agreement, because a single up-front premium inside a loan means you also pay interest on it
- What happens if you sell the car or settle the finance early, and whether any premium is refundable
- Your cooling-off right, normally at least 14 days from receiving documents where nothing has been claimed
For embedded products sold alongside a vehicle purchase, the cost is easy to lose inside a monthly instalment. Ask what the product costs on its own, in rand, before you agree to it.
Is a cell captive policy safe, and where do you complain?
Insurers in South Africa are licensed under the Insurance Act. Guardrisk Insurance Company Limited is a licensed non-life insurer, and you can check any insurer against the Prudential Authority's published list of licensed insurers and the FSCA register. Do that for the insurer named on your own schedule.
Guardrisk says your intermediary or administrator, named in the Disclosure Document at the back of your policy, should be your first point of contact for a query or complaint. Its complaints department, 0860 333 361, is for use after you have tried them first.
For a rejected or mishandled claim, use the internal complaints process and then the National Financial Ombud (nfosa.co.za) free of charge. If the issue is how the product was sold, for example cover added to a finance deal without proper explanation, that is a FAIS complaint against the intermediary and goes to the FAIS Ombud.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Guardrisk contact number?
Guardrisk does not sell to the public. According to its website (checked 29 September 2026), the Johannesburg office takes general and new business enquiries on +27 (11) 669 1000. The 0860 222 555 line is for Guardrisk Motor claims on commercial and corporate fleets, not private cars. For a private policy, use the intermediary or administrator on your schedule.
Can I buy car insurance directly from Guardrisk?
No. Guardrisk is a cell captive insurer that underwrites products designed, branded and sold by other businesses. You reach it through a dealership, retailer, broker, underwriting manager or affinity scheme, and its name appears on your policy schedule.
Why is Guardrisk on my car insurance policy?
Because the brand you bought from may not hold an insurance licence. Guardrisk carries the risk through a ring-fenced cell owned by that business. If the schedule names Guardrisk as the insurer, it is the party obliged to pay a valid claim.
Is Guardrisk a legitimate insurer?
Guardrisk Insurance Company Limited is a licensed non-life insurer and part of JSE-listed Momentum Group. You can verify it on the Prudential Authority's published list of licensed insurers and the FSCA register. Note that a different company trades under the GUARD RISK name and is not associated with it.
What is a cell captive in insurance?
A ring-fenced cell inside a licensed insurer that lets a business own an insurance product without setting up its own insurance company. The insurer supplies the licence and underwriting, and the cell owner brings customers and shares in the result.
Who do I claim from on a Guardrisk-underwritten policy?
Guardrisk says to contact the intermediary or administrator noted in your policy schedule for claims on products that are not on its General Insurance page. Confirm the claims number and after-hours route when the policy starts, not after an accident.
Does a cell captive policy pay claims more slowly?
We cannot compare claim speeds. The insurer carries the same legal obligation as on any other policy. What can make claims harder is bespoke wording with tight limits and waiting periods, which is why you should read the full document rather than the brochure.
How do I complain about a Guardrisk policy?
Start with your intermediary or administrator, then Guardrisk's complaints department on 0860 333 361, in writing. If the claim dispute is unresolved, refer it free of charge to the National Financial Ombud. If the complaint is about how the cover was sold, go to the FAIS Ombud.
